I worked in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR). When people think of the federal government's response to a natural disaster, they usually think of FEMA. In reality, FEMA usually only serves as a coordinating agency and organizes different agencies responses to natural disasters. The ASPR's office is responsible for managing the federal government's healthcare response to a natural disaster, mobilizing necessary healthcare infrastructure like physicians, medical supplies, etc. During my internship I developed a web app that automated the production of reports that compiled physician field data collected from patients during natural disasters. I also assisted in the organization of a healthcare technology conference for several government agencies and private industry partners.
